Dany Villaneuva faces deportation

Dany Villanueva, the older brother of Fredy Villanueva, who was killed by the Montreal Police in August 2008, has learned that the Canada Border Services Agency will begin the process of trying to deport him from Canada, by attempting to remove his permanent residency status.

Honduras held presidential, parliamentary, and local elections on Sunday, but most Latin American countries have not recognized the results, since they were carried out under the coup government of Roberto Micheletti, which deposed the elected goverment of Manuel Zelaya on June 28th of this year.  Boycotts of the elections were organized, with many Hondurans refusing to refer to them as anything other than "the event".

US to recognize Honduras election

On Sunday, Honduras held their regularly scheduled presidential election, despite the call for a boycott by supporters of Manuel Zelaya, who was deposed as president by a coup this summer.  The election was won by the conservative National Party's Porfirio Lobo Sosa.

The US has decided to recognize the elections as legitimate, though many other countries are failing to do so.

Honduras coup government limits media freedoms

Al-Jazeera is reporting that

Honduras's government has imposed a new law limiting media freedoms in the country, amid a political standoff between Roberto Micheletti, the de facto leader, and Manuel Zelaya, the deposed president.

The new legislation gives Micheletti's government the power to close down radio and television stations that incite "social anarchy" or "national hatred".

IMF gives $150M to Honduras coup regime

The Honduran Central Bank has reported that the IMF gave $150 million to Honduras on Friday, with a further $13.8 million to arrive next week.  The money comes just two months after a military coup was carried out against Honduran President Manuel Zelaya.  The Organization of American States unanimously condemned the coup.  Since that time, the country has seen political assasinations, and a number of detentions at the hands of the government.

Two political assassinations in Honduras

In Honduras, the political crisis that has been unfolding since the military coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya last month has intensified. On Saturday, Roger Bados, a former union president and member of a grassroots group struggling against the coup was shot dead after a group of men entered his home.

The same night, Ramón García, another prominent leftist, was killed by unknown assailants after being ordered off a bus.

Honduran president Zelaya blocked from re-entering the country

In Honduras, following the military coup d'état carried out on June 28th, CommonDreams.org reports that

A plane carrying deposed President Manuel Zelaya was blocked from landing in Honduras as he tried to enter the country and resume power. He vowed to return as the jet he was traveling in headed to Nicaragua.
